So what is sunburn anyway? Sunburn is the body’s reaction to too much ultraviolet radiation. There can be harmful ultraviolet rays present, even when it’s not a bright , hot, sunny day. In fact, it can even damage your skin on those cooler, cloudy days. When we are sunburned, it means out skin has been burned by this radiation. It can only take as little as 11 minutes to develop a sunburn, and can continue to develop depending on the severity of radiation. Long term risks include wrinkling, skin cancer and other nasty effects.
Unfortunately, over 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer each year. Becuase it is so common and dangerous, it’s important that you are educated in treatments availiable and ways to prevent getting burned.
